First thing – take a deep breath in and exhale. Then when you are finished reading this blog, click the link and practice the pause breath video.
There is no better time to PAUSE than right now. We are all in this current state of affairs together. I think collective pausing and breathing will give all of us time to settle, be in our bodies and quiet our minds.
Although (as of this writing) we are not in a shelter state here in New Mexico, I have cancelled all my in-person work and am only offering online yoga and yoga therapy sessions. Like you, I have stocked my kitchen so I can avoid the grocery store as much as possible.
I am also making my home as much of a refuge as possible. It’s not hard, as I love my home. I’m finding this a great opportunity to organize, reflect on what I really need and even do some deep cleaning! The activities won’t change what is going on in the outside world, but it does provide me a sense of control, structure and accomplishment.
I’m also reading more – the big stack of books near my bed is getting smaller. I have a number of online yoga courses I have purchased over the years for professional development that I am now able to dive into – learning continues! And of course, I’m continuing to practice yoga and get outside when I can.
What are you doing to fill your time? I think the more we stay connected and share, the more we will be together in this time of crisis.
SOCIAL DISTANCING WITHOUT ISOLATING
By now we know that social distancing is the best way to flatten the curve to protect ourselves, our communities and our world. However, this doesn’t mean we should disconnect from our friends and family.
Use technology to keep in touch – skype, zoom or facetime with your family and friends. Now more than ever it is important to stay in touch, share what you are doing to fill your time and stay connected. Use email as a tool to stay connected by writing e-letters. Check in on friends you don’t always connect with.
Talk with your family and friends about your fears and also talk about things to keep your mind off the situation at hand.
Try journaling, meditating, self-reflection or yoga to connect with yourself.
Our world is currently changing and how we live, move and breathe in it is a part of that change. Distancing ourselves can be a negative, but we can also view it as an opportunity to grow and expand. In yoga we use the word spanda to define the expanding and contracting of all things. Right now the universe with us in it, is pulsing, vibrating and changing. Allow yourself to expand and contract too and regain the natural joy in your life even in the midst of turmoil and chaos.

May we who are merely inconvenienced remember those whose lives are at stake.
May we who have no risk factors remember those most vulnerable.
May we who have the luxury of working from home remember those who must choose between preserving their health or making their rent.
May we who have to cancel our trips remember those that have no place to go.
May we who are losing our margin money in the tumult of the economic market remember those who have no margin at all.
May we who settle in for a quarantine at home remember those who have no home.
During this time when we cannot physically wrap our arms around each other, let us yet find ways to be the loving embrace of God to our neighbors.
